HTC, Xiaomi: Canceled Helio X20 Devices Due To Overheating?
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 SoC caused quite a stir last year on account of overheating issues, and to this end, it looks like the company may have taken extra precautions to avoid repeating the same scenario with the release of the Snapdragon 820 chipset.
Unfortunately, it seems like SoC overheating issues in the mobile world may have made a comeback, this time around due to one of MediaTek’s high-end chipsets: the Helio X20. Fresh reports from sources in Asia suggest that the Helio X20 is affected by overheating problems and further claim that manufacturers such as HTC, Xiaomi, and Lenovo have already canceled their plans surrounding the Helio X20.

HTC, Xiaomi, and Lenovo Cancel Helio X20 Devices?
Last December the MediaTek Helio X20 seemed ready to take the mobile world by storm. Early benchmark results have shown great levels of performance, with Geekbench revealing scores of 2,146 and 6,961 points in single and multi-core tests respectively.
Sadly, it looks like the Helio X20 might not be as good as we were initially led to believe. According to sources from Asia, the X20 (MT6797) is affected by overheating issues, which apparently led to the cancelation of several smartphones. Sources say that HTC, Xiaomi, as well as Lenovo, have canceled their plans to release terminals equipped with the Helio X20 for these very reasons. Evidently, following last year’s fiasco surrounding the Snapdragon 810, smartphone makers seem to have become more cautious in order to avoid bad publicity.
The source claims that, as yet, four or five large smartphone makers have ditched their plans to adopt the Helio X20, so Meizu might also be among them.
The Helio X20 is a three-cluster 10-core CPU with a dual-core Cortex-A72 unit clocked at 2.5 GHz, and two quad-core Cortex-A53 units clocked at 2.0 and 1.4 GHz respectively.
Hopefully, MediaTek will be able to address the issue, or at least confirm or deny these rumors through a press release. Either way, we’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we find out more.
